Among these, lowering the protein content in dairy cow diets stands out as a promising strategic pathway. But how can we reduce protein levels while still maintaining, at the very least, optimal zootechnical performance? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A major challenge: balancing productivity and sustainability <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The European dairy industry is at a crossroads. Faced with increasing regulatory pressure (the Farm to Fork strategy, CAP eco-schemes, \u201ccarbon farming\u201d initiatives, nitrate directives\u2026), farmers are being called upon to produce more efficiently with less \u2014 fewer inputs, fewer emissions, less strain on natural resources \u2014 all while safeguarding the profitability of their farms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Precision feeding is becoming an essential tool for reducing nitrogen losses and lowering the carbon footprint. And that begins with rethinking the role of protein in the ration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-medium\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/shutterstock_659176180-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"reductions in protein milk production\" class=\"wp-image-35991\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/shutterstock_659176180-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/shutterstock_659176180-1024x674.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/shutterstock_659176180-768x506.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/shutterstock_659176180-1536x1012.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/shutterstock_659176180-2048x1349.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why reduce protein in dairy production?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lowering dietary protein has multiple benefits: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduced nitrogen losses in urine and manure <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lower greenhouse gas emissions <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduced feed costs, particularly by limiting reliance on soybean meal <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Soybean meal, largely imported and a major source of CO\u2082 emissions (up to 8 kg CO\u2082 equivalent per kg when land-use change is factored in), weighs heavily on the farm\u2019s carbon balance. However, any reduction must be carefully managed \u2014 the nutritional balance of the animals and their performance must be preserved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A natural alternative: stimulating microbial protein<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know that most of the protein actually available to the cow comes from microbial synthesis in the rumen? Optimizing this process offers significant potential. This is precisely where plant extracts come in \u2014 helping to modulate rumen microbiota activity in a favorable way.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The result<\/strong>: improved utilization of ingested nitrogen and a marked increase in metabolizable protein, i.e. protein truly available for the animal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Field-proven results confirmed by life cycle assessment <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutfeed.net\/animal-feed\/feed-additives\/a-helping-hand-for-sustainable-dairy-farming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trials conducted in both the United States<\/a> and Europe have shown that a lower-protein diet supplemented with a synergistic blend of plant extracts (essential oils and spices) can: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maintain milk yield <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduce nitrogen excretion <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improve feed efficiency <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/en\/life-cycle-assessment-lca\/\">A life cycle assessment <\/a>also quantified the environmental gain: up to \u20137.9% greenhouse gas emissions for the ration enriched with plant extracts. At the scale of a 100-cow herd, this equates to over 54 tonnes of CO\u2082 equivalent avoided annually, roughly the same as more than 30 round trips from Paris to New York.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Farine-soja-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"reductions in protein milk production\" class=\"wp-image-35996\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Farine-soja-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Farine-soja-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Farine-soja-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Farine-soja-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.phode-animalcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Farine-soja-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Win\u2013Win approach<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With just a few grams of a blend based on plant extracts, farmers can feasibly reduce crude protein levels in the diet by one percentage point while safeguarding performance.
